Project 1- Comic/Typographic Zine

This project required me to team up and showcase my teamwork skills. Me and teammate got ‘Little Tommy Tucker’ as a nursery rhyme to work with and immediately we had so many ideas to put down on paper. We thought it would be a really good idea to make this comic about a little boy with an unhealthy obsession with unhealthy food such as burgers and pizzas. We did this to contract ‘little’ to humourise the comic a little.

Initially, my teammate was meant to draw, fine line and add text however due to time limitations, we had to switch roles to ensure we finish our comic in time. I decided to do a few mock up pages of our comic to bring the visions to life and to ensure we have a storyline we can follow in our final outcome.

After the mock up, I asked my teammate if she approves to make sure we’re on the same page and to ensure I stick to some sort of plan when drawing our final piece. I also added some onomatopoeia into the mock up to humourise it and to plan what kind of words I’d like to put into the comic.

I really wanted our comic to have 90s children’s book elements through colours and styles of the characters and I was really inspired by Captain underpants’ ‘lonely toons’ and ‘Tom and Jerry’ and their use of colour mostly primary which we tried to convey in our final piece. I tried to follow my mock up storyline however I had so many more ideas that I wanted to show in the comic. I also tried to convey a comedy side to our comic through my style of drawing and through what and how I drew them.

Our feedback was generally positive and although we could’ve changed a few things about our comic, we were really happy and proud of the final outcome therefore we decided to keep our original design.
